Frequently Asked Questions

Why so much time outdoors?

There are plenty of studies showing the benefits to wellbeing to time spent outdoors for people of all ages. However, we all understand intrinsically that time outside is beneficial for our well being. Unfortunately, due to our busy, modern lives we often spend time hopping from one climate controlled environment to another. We set out to create this school to intentionally prioritizes the outdoors for children because of the immense emotional, social, physical, and mental benefits for development.

The commitment to going outdoors everyday in all weather builds resilience in students and when the learning is fun - and there are endless fun experiences in the outdoors - you make life long learners.

Why play-based learning?

At young ages when children are building the foundation for their sensory perceptions and physical abilities, when energy and curiosity are at an all-time high, learning should be fun. Play-based learning is motivating and engaging, especially for early learners. We believe that instilling a positive association with learning early on helps students flourish later in life and become life long learners.

I love the idea of outdoor-centric learning, but will my child be ready for kindergarten?

Absolutely. We work with parents to build each child’s skills and core competencies in all the basic categories your child would be expected to know before attending a typical kindergarten program.

How can parents get involved?

Students feel a sense of community with their school, but our families are a part of the community as well. That’s why we offer many different ways to get involved - including seasonally planned and scheduled family events, volunteer school projects and a volunteer Class Parent program for parents who have the ability and desire to be deeply involved in their child’s education. See more on our Community page.

Why mixed-age classes?

A mixed-age class gives students the opportunity to be immersed in a more family-like culture where they learn from each other. The older students willingly take on more responsibility and learn valuable life skills. The younger ones look forward to acquiring the skills and abilities of the older ones. And the older students have the opportunity to be role models and mentors, which develops their self-confidence and leadership skills.

Over and above all that, children cared for within the context of healthy, long-term relationships are well prepared for school and life. In mixed-age classes, typically spaced in three-year intervals, students are with the same teacher through that time. We offer a stable, safe, and loving homelike environment, where there is space for all students to learn at their own pace.

What skills does my child need to fit with your program?

It is important that preschool and kindergarten aged students have basic self help skills and are able to follow basic directions. These are all skills that will be developed and will flourish in our unique program where we encourage not only independence, but care and respect for fellow students.

Do you really go outside no matter the weather?

Yes, really! Baring extreme and unsafe weather conditions, of course. The truth is, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing (choices). That’s why it is necessary that all Homestead School students are properly prepared for whatever the weather brings. See our Clothing and Gear page to learn more.

What do you do outside?

There is a ton to do and learn outside on the Homestead - and during all seasons. Students tend to and enjoy the taste of their dedicated kids garden, and play in the mud kitchen, sand box and playhouse. They climb, balance and swing. They hike in the woods to explore and study nature. They visit the chicken flock, resident sows and goat herd. In the fall they rake leaf piles to jump in, in winter they build snow men and make snow angles. We even trek to the creek or the river. And so much more!

Do you watch any TV or movies?

No. We believe that it is entirely up to the parent to determine if and when to allow screen-time for their children. There are no screens in any class settings.

I see lunch and snack are included - what’s on the menu?

Current menu would be shared at your prospective parent/student interviews. Menu choices offer balanced snacks and lunches with minimally processed foods and prioritize whole foods and whole grains. All students have the same lunch and are encouraged to try all of their food (even the veggies).

Are you licensed?
