Clothing + Gear

At Homestead School, every season is outdoor season! Whether it’s sunny, rainy, or snowy, we believe kids thrive when they’re outside exploring and learning. Making sure kids are dressed appropriately gives them confidence, and will keep them warm, dry, and tantrum-free.

Notes before you gear up…

One is enough - you don’t need a wardrobe of gear - just one solid set that can handle daily use and keep your child comfortable.

Avoid cotton - Cotton holds moisture, making kids colder. Stick to 100% wool or synthetic materials to keep them warm and dry during the cold months.

Independence - every item we recommend is chosen to make dressing easier for your child (and for you!). When kids can put on their own gear, it builds confidence and independence.

Secondhand is smart - hand-me-downs, thrift store finds, or secondhand treasures are just as effective as brand-new gear (and they’re easier on your wallet and the planet).

We’re here to help - if you have questions, concerns, or need help getting the right gear, please reach out to us. We even have some loaner items we’d be happy to share!

The Gear

  • The foundation of outdoor dressing! Base layers trap body heat and wick moisture away, keeping kids warm and dry during active play.

    Look for:

    • Tops and Bottoms: Long-sleeve shirts and leggings made from 100% wool or synthetic materials (absolutely no cotton!).

    • Socks: Wool or synthetic socks to keep little toes warm and dry.

    Recommended Brands:

  • The mid layer provides essential warmth without bulk, making it perfect for layering and movement.

    Look for:

    • Tops: Fleece pullovers, wool sweaters, or lightweight jackets that fit comfortably over the base layer.

    • Bottoms: Fleece pants or insulated leggings for added warmth.

  • For those in-between days when it’s chilly but not freezing, and the weather is dry, a versatile jacket is a great option. This layer provides warmth and protection without the need for full-on rain or snow gear.

    Look for:

    • Lightweight, insulated jackets or windbreakers that are breathable and easy to move in.

    • Materials like fleece-lined or quilted polyester for warmth without being bulky.

  • A rain suit is a year-round essential that keeps your kiddo clean and dry on wet, muddy, or messy days.

    Look for:

    • Full-body waterproof suits with a hood.

    • Elastic cuffs at the wrists and ankles to keep water out.

    Recommended Brand:

    • Tuffo

  • For snowy days, a one-piece snow suit is the ultimate cold-weather armor.

    Look for:

    • Waterproof, insulated one-piece suits that are easy to put on and keep snow out.

  • These extremities are quick to lose heat, so proper gear is essential.

    Head:

    • Hats: Look for snug hats that cover the ears and are made from 100% wool or synthetic materials.

    Neck:

    • Neck Gaiters: A safe and cozy alternative to scarves, perfect for extra warmth.

    Hands:

    • Thin Gloves or Mittens: Great for dexterity in milder weather. NO COTTON.

    • Rain Mittens: Waterproof mittens with cuffs large enough to go over jackets.

    • Snow Mittens: Insulated mittens with long cuffs to seal out snow.

    Feet:

    • Rain Boots: Waterproof boots for wet, slushy conditions.

    • Snow Boots: Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction for icy days.
